Bill,
I am no specialist, but as I have a grip safety P04 in my collection, I have read up on these in the past.

Referring to volume II of 'The Borchardt & Luger Automatic Pistols', it says, in the production P04's based on the standard P08 (short) frame due to the exigencies of wartime manufacture; these pistols bear the year of manufacture, 1916 or 1917, over the chamber, on the left frame rail and foresight bed.
