Tom, I have tried many times to explain to acquaintances (sometimes to friends) that it is necessary to use a globe to track the paths of aircraft (and ships) from one continent to another. Example; flying from New York to Paris, you fly over Ireland. (Close enough to not matter).
Occasionally, they persist in believing that a map shows how that is not possible. I slot those people in the group 'flatlanders'.
