Don, there may be something to your theory. While the steel used by Mauser is often considered to be the best ever used for Lugers, unseen internal flaws were still possible.

While the Luger action is strong, it's still prudent to only use standard cartridges and avoid NATO, +P and such when shooting these old warhorses.
