Hi Bruce,
First - on "36" - Gibson notes an estimated 500. Based on the serial number ranges, there may have been fewer, rather then greater, then that estimate.
Second - the "36" is considered as a transitional HK between the Late "S" and the "1936", so you will see variations even within that variation (note grips, proper LWaA S-1 transition, etc.). To note - on my "36"s - I have both - the gauge measurement perpendiculiar to and along the bore axis. Both are correct.
