As far as folks having thin skins, I would say it goes both ways on this issue. These days, people are way too uptight and easily offended by politically incorrect words. If the word in question is so derogatory, then why did I see a sign in a German-American restaurant in Munster, Texas, that reads, "What do you call a grumpy German? A sour Kraut."
Perhaps the restaurant should be boycotted?
Carroll O'Connor used that term on the 70s sitcom "All in the Family," and it didn't seem to bother anyone back then. I doubt a TV show could get away with that today.
