Doug,
HK used Walnut, and both fine checkered and coarse checkered Brown plastic grips for the first contract of 10,000 guns which ended in 1938.
For the second contract, starting in 1940, with the exception of some military to commercial conversions, they used Black coarse checkered plastic grips.
There were a little over 2000 military guns produced from 1940 to 1944, compared to the 10,000 produced primarily in 1936 and 1937, with a few in 1938. So relatively fewer with Black grips.
There were a few GI and PX guns produced in 1945 which used Black plastic grips.
Also, interspersed with the military production, primarily in 1939, HK produced a number of commercial variations and presentation guns. These mainly used Brown coarse checkered grips but other types and styles are seen, especially on the presentation pieces, some very elaborate.
While the above is not an exhaustive analysis, I hope it gives you a better idea of what went on at HK during their production years.
Happy New Year,
John
