Let me add my welcome to the Lugeforum...
In addition to the advice given by Ed, make sure you are in "Close up" ; "Portrait" or "Macro" mode (whichever applies to your camera) to take really close up photos... Don't try to hold the camera closer than about 10-12 inches from what you are trying to capture. the use of a tripod or something to steady the camera other than your hands is also a good idea.
