Michael, If it is a repro? It is probably made of birchwood. American Walnut would most likely be a darker wood that can have highly figured grain, right down to straight as a fence post. original stocks were usually made of European walnut.

Maple would be pale in color, but usually with some figure in it that could have a wide variation of pattern. Birdseye, quilt, shell, etc.

It's probably not oak.
