Yep - in short - I kind'a agree...
For example, I just e-mailed Dwight about his 1915. The Forum gave me the knowledge to know what Dwight sees is what I'll see too. I had to sell one of my Colt NM to pay for it - but I know what I'll get back is a Luger that another Patron stands behind. I'm not sure what that's worth on Gunbroker (I'm LOL as a type that quip), but to me - it's worth a lot. In short, those that stand behind the Forum are it's "worth".
As for the cost of running the site..??
I dunno - each month, Jen and I pay the bills, as we own the servers, the circuits and the programs. I spend my own money for all these, as there are no Sponsors, no BANNER ads, nothing. Just Jen and I. We subsidize this site along with the 50+Patrons - along with with the P 38 Forum - each and every day. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It all runs on dedicated servers and circuits out of our house and "business". For that - both forums take about 132,000 hits a day with about 2,134 unique users. Each day. Every day.
Return on investment? I dunno. The "return on investment" is what folks learn and they add to their own "value" for their enthusiam in collecting.
As for me? I'm just like you. An enthusiast and collector. While I specialize in Krieghoffs - I've learned about all types of Lugers, and will continue to invest in this site until there is "no return".
But - that's just me...
