I have a 1940 "42".

It has a five digit serial # (84xx)

No suffix.

Can I asssume from this, that it was from the "very first" run of serial numbers ( prior to xxxxa )?

Whould this in turn mean (re: your research) that it WAS NOT originally issued with Black Plastic grips?
