Broken Grips--Best methods to fix?
Greetings!
What is the best method for repairing Luger grips that are split off at the safety? I have two of them, one a 1917 Artillery, the other my godfather's byf 41 he took away from a German officer in Germany. The pieces are present and fit very well, but one grip appears to be rather gun oil-soaked, which will likely hinder glueing.
I am contemplating waxing the heck out of the metal with Johnson's Paste Wax, then using Brownell's Acraglas to glue the pieces right on the gun(s) to align them, and toothpicks and a dry toothbrush to get the excess out of the checkering before it cures. The backs can be scraped with a sharp knife once they're cured.
In the past, I've used Texize K2R spot lifter, sometimes repeatedly, to dry oily wood prior to gluing.
Anybody have any other tips? I guess I'm fishing for better ideas.
As always, thanks for an entertaining and informative site.
