This applies everywhere.

This is of no use whatsoever when a majority of the voters don't feel concerned by the right to own weapons as they won't listen for lack of interest. Usually they are the same who don't care about fighting for their own freedom. My feeling is that this is a cultural thing: French, Brits & Germans historically are subjects of their Kings/Queens and rely on the State to be governed ("guided") and protected whereas people in the US are still (free) citizens who want to rely upon themselves and don't want to delegate the job.
(Actually Poland reintroduced the right to be armed at home after the fall of communism when the State realised it could not contain crime. Depriving people of weapons does not seem to be inevitable even in Europe. It's maybe time for the UK to do the same thing - so far gun control has been a perfect contra productive failure.)
