just my speculation here... but since the formation is so wide and the fact that the soldiers in the rear rank have their pistols elevated... I would respectfully disagree with your assessment... Even in those embittered times... most NCOs took care of their soldiers and to allow the potential of a discharge from a rear rank pistol to wound, kill, or even damage the hearing of a soldier in the front rank would be too risky for this to be anything but a sight alignment training session... at least I would hope that this was the case...
What do you say we stick to the subject of Lugers... before we drift off on a subject that I would probably have to nuke... with the delete key...
