Ron,
I would not want to start a Pro and Con Discusssion at this late date but I feel that this could have been a practice formation used in Some of the various Attrocities and for possible uprisings.
The rear row in the formation was so placed to step forward and fill the gap for reloading and firearm failure.
A standard military formation to meet mass control problems that was a typical formation of the Central and Eastern European Armies.
A hold over from pre WW-1 Days.
Just My Opinion.
And a beautiful touch up job on a second or third generation picture, Looks as good or better than the original.
It sure must be nice to have the Know how to use these New Fangled Computer Tools!
