Mark, Tom gives good advice but don't eat the thing! Ron is correct too...I have looked it over and it has too many tell tale signs that it is old and in my opinion , period early 1900's. The brass closure stud has a nice patina, the leather is nicely aged and that is not something you can do easily or expertly and thusly correctly. The stitching is worn and worn through in the correct places and I would bet my bottom dollar that it original. Now, is it Portugese(AE), Imperial Navy, or Artillery?
