Hope you enjoy looking over the vast information here in the forum. I only own one Luger, but I find the general information about collecting to be helpful. Also, I don’t have to pay for the extremely expensive Luger source books, I just post the question and hopefully one of the experts jumps in.

You’ve piqued my interest in your son’s sniper rifle. I’ve seen many real and faked German WW2 snipers, but never one with a “half moon” cut out of the bolt handle to clear the scope. Even though this is a high turret mount, all of the bolt handles have this appearance to my experience:

I don’t have Law’s book on sniper variants of the K98k rifle with me now, but I should caution you that the double claw mount is about the most commonly faked German sniper out there. These were known to go to SS units, and thus they are routinely faked for super high resale. Here is a pic of a Sarco reproduction double claw mount:

Watch out for this fakery equipment. Is there any way you could post a picture of the bolt handle in question? I can also answer some of the questions posted on your Web site under the “German Weapons” section. The manufacturing code ax on a 98k receiver means it was made at the Erfurt factory of Feinmechanische Werke. One of your posters asked where he could buy a 98k online. Here are two links:
