Barrel replacement is far less expensive than reboring to a larger caliber... but does require special tools that the average gunsmith would not have... if you decide to change calibers, get someone who knows how and has the right tools.

Tom Heller (Lugerdoc) and Hugh Clark are two forum members that have a good reputation for barrel work.

Of course, if the guns you guys are talking about are mixed parts and not collectables... then you could just swap the whole upper assembly and both of you would be happy...
