I forgot to add: There are other choices besides a Glock or 1911 type gun, as far as autos go. Talk with people who actually carry guns and find out the pros and cons of the different sizes, mechanisms and calibers. Really do your home work in this area. Don't forget about revlovers, too. Small .38's, 357's, and .44 specials are good choices. I know most people favor more bullets than a revolver will carry and I'm no different, you can't have too many bullets in a gunfight. But when you consider that the vast majority of shootings last about 2.5-3 seconds with 3-4 rounds total being fired between good guy and bad guy a good wheel gun could fit the bill.
Above all, when you make the decision to carry concealed, take a class that teaches the moral and legal aspects of using deadly force. Once you pull the trigger there is no going back.
