Here's my two cents worth. Why risk a nice collectible gun like a wartime P-38 or any Luger to that kind of situation? If you get into a shooting, even justified, the gun is going to be taken as evidence until the case is adjudicated. That could take years. You also have to consider the possibility of damage if its dropped.
I've been active, fulltime law enforcement for 18 years and the other guys are right, don't trust your life to a Luger when there are other, better options available. To me a 9MM is the minimum I would carry. .380's and .25's will just piss someone off. For off duty I either carry a Glock Mod. 27 in .40 or a Para Ordnance LDA single stack in .45. Any small .45 or .40 is better than a 9MM. Why do you think law enforcement agencies are going to the .40 in droves? Because it out performs the 9MM in real life shootings. My dept. change from the 9MM Glocks we had just purchased and went to the Glock 22 .40 because people weren't staying shot with the 9.
