Thank you to all who responded to my questions. I think that I solved the problems. On the AE, I found a side plate that worked and compared the trigger levers. My trigger lever was thicker on th part that operates against the sear. I removed some material until it apears to work. At least it works by hand now.
On the artillery that locked open with one round in the magazine, I went back to the e-book on luger mechanics and they descrbed the exact problem and said that it was fairly common. I then followed their instructions to remove a little material from the hold open lever where it is pushed up by the knob on the magazine until the problem went away.
