Rick,
I would be very supprised if the "recoil spring retainer(hook)" were modified by any other method than as follows:
1, Anneal entire "recoil spring retainer(hook)" by burying in hardwood ashes, in a one pound coffee can or the like. Approximatly centering the "recoil spring retainer(hook)" in the ashes.
2, Bury this level to top in a bed of dull red coal ashes and leave until the entire can and contents heats too a dull red.
3, Wait until the entire ashe bed cools until there is no visible red color.
4, Remove the can of ashes from the bed and place in a cinder block cubicle of blocks on a block base, with a block for a cover.
5, Allow to cool for at least 12 hours.
6, The "recoil spring retainer(hook)" will now be annealed and may now be straightened and reshaped to the new length.
7, Heat to a medium red (bright without blister).
8 Quench by quickly lower vertically into a can of 10 weight motor oil.
9, Bright polish several areas of the part.
10, Loosly hang the part on a wire looped through the hole in the large end.
11, Heat to a Dark Straw or Light Brown (Do not heat to a Blue).
12, Quench by quickly lower vertically into a can of 10 weight motor oil.
NOTE.... It is VERY important to Quench any long part vertically, as any deviation from vertical results in warping, Which is proportional to the amount of angle from the vertical.
This is the way that the old timers accomplished renovations similar to this.
