In many European countries, strict gun laws mean that one can only keep certain guns that are rendered useless in quite crude manners. Over here in the Netherlands, a side arm like the Luger may only be owned by someone without a gun permit if it has been split in half... Certain rifles may be owned if they are completely welded shut, the barrel has been perforated at 3 positions and a metal rod is welded into the mouth of the gun. Other European countries allow people to own 'decoration weapons' if the firing mechanism is completely destroyed.
