Quite a while back when I was on one of my stints being on the "good" side of law enforcement (ya'll know how it goes back& forth depending on the situation)a buddy asked if I wanted to visit his half cousin's wife's brother's stepbrother, he was
the sheriff in the town of Stevenson. Said he had a few guns at the station. So in we went, nice guy, didn't seem to recognize me, so we made the obligatory small talk about weather, hunting, fishing, ect. as we leaned on a pickup and chewed Redman. After a period of politeness and spitting my pal brought up firearms. Sure, come on it. Two BARs with loaded clips, two Thompsons, three M-2 carbines, he had an UZI for personal use, but in the back room was a wooden box about 3'x3',1' high, absoultely full of handguns. Had to have been 100 or more. He told me that some were pickups from drunks, lots were from domestic quarrels where they offered an option to give up the booze and asked if there were any guns in the trailer, always took them with them, said you can have them back in 48 hrs, lots of folks didn't pick them up, and lots of folks, usually elderly, just called and said "come pick this gun up, I don't want it in the house." Add that to the stolen guns not recovered, ect, lots of them just get dropped off.
When asked what he did with them, he just smiled, said it was good to meet me, come by anytime.
