Usually just a police unit, there were many police that were placed into the military as hitler had his army go into other countries. Unless it has police markings, usually on the grip strap, then it is almost impossible to figure out the specific unit.
Does it have the sear safety also? All Lugers have the sear bar and above it would be the sear safety. It is possible that the holster did not belong to the gun, unless it is serial numbered to the gun. I have a 1942 police that is serial numbered for the holster and gun. But many guns were picked up and then a holster from another stack, so sometimes they don't match.
I finally looked up more information in Jan Stills 3rd Reich Lugers.
The S42 1939 was made from serial number 4000n - 6000r, there were 38,500 made.
The army acceptance stamps should be the Eagle (bird) 63 or E/83
Jan states that only about 600 1939 S/42 were procured for the Police, so it is fairly rare in that regard. There should be some police acceptance stamps on it, an E/L (eagle L).
Usually magazines are numbered 1, 2 or 3 for the police, although Bill M., has seen them for the police that were with the plus sign, which is for the 2nd magazine.
