I don't think the finger would have come off just pulling it with a string. He should have at least taken a picture of it in the jar. Knew a guy a long time ago who had a set of baby vice grips to assist in such "activities". 100' of string was an essential part of the combat engineer's demo kit, used it for removing firearms and other US and enemy equipment to insure no trip wires, grenades, ect were placed under or attatched to the item. What I can't imagine is a decomposed body part being kept in the tropics in a jar from Saipan to the US with no refridgeration. Might have taken months. Also the military really takes a poor view of that type of activity. How would you like for that to leak out under your pillow?
