This is rather sad that short-sighted politicians (liberal or conservative) must do this to pieces of history. As a history major it grieves me to see wanton destruction of history. It is equivalent to the first emperor of China burning the books, to the Nazis burning books. I'd settle for the less savory method of deactivating them and putting them in a museum. Historical items should not be destroyed/melted into slag.
