Yes, nice idea.
However this gun is on the books (registered) and as handguns are already strictly controlled here it would be very difficult to explain where it had suddenly disappeared to. I think the plods would take a very dim view if you tried pleading that it had been stolen, especially in light of all the goings on recently.
