That's a new one on me...

Sticking something that's removable and won't hurt the finish to the back of the lever seems like your best bet to help you shoot it while preserving its original state. Newer series 1911's have an extra bump on the lever (not a fan), so mimicking that setup sounds like it might help. I think it's still possible to find an extra part, which could be modified as severely as you want.

Spring strength can vary. I have a few Lugers with the original version of the grip safety. The spring on one is quite stiff, on another, not much more than a whisper is needed to depress it, although its action is positive. Finding a weaker spring to install, or creating one, might also work--although I'm not sure how the latter would be accomplished.

Maybe you could make a special glove that would reinforce the soft area of your web with an incorporated insert?
