You are correct, Quintin! Somebody mentioned "Navy" in a comment, and I didn't look back at the pics to check.

The lower position of the GESICHERT is found on all Lugers with grip safeties. In the event that it's in the white instead, it was milled into the surface after bluing.

p.s. I think either the up or down safety can be mechanically rearranged a bit so as to function in the reverse of what would be expected for the variation.
