Barrel length. In order not to create a SBR, Martz's barrels on projects that would be used with a stock were at least 16", presumably so they would be more universally marketable.

It's possible, of course, if you live in a state that allows, to do the federal paperwork, background check, and $200 payment for the tax involved to legally own an SBR. Original Carbines have been exempted from this rule, like an original Artillery or Navy.
