This was a flaw with the original luger that the Swiss corrected with their M29 and continued by Mauser with their 1970s Parabellum, by making the checkered circle solid (not hollow inside). To avoid this problem, always make sure that the pistol is "out of battery" (toggle in the held open position) before attempting to open the TD lever. or if stuck, only push down on the non-checkered part.
