That little handbook that says ALL Lugers have strawed small parts is NOT completely correct! "What do you expect for $10" is what Ralph used to tell me about it. It does fit in your pocket to take to gunshows but watch the "strawing information" Most accurate references will show that a 1940 42 should have salt blued small parts. Assuming it is in the "z" through "n" block (no j block according to Still) The early ones from z to d block will have a type 2 Army Magazine (blued tube aluminum bottom with side pin at bottom) after d block to n will have a type 3 magazine which is 122 code extruded with a blued tube body and the bottom is flat and a aluminum bottom with a small blued center (through the center of the thumb dishes) pin. So you need to identify the letter suffix of the serial number located on teh front of the frame above the trigger guard when viewed from the muzzle (GUN EMPTY AND SAFE)
