Hi Paul,
Welcome to the forum! From your description you have what we call a "mixmaster", a gun assembled from parts from several different guns. The frame, with 1917 stamped on it, is from a 1917 Navy Luger, the toggle marked S/42 is from a Mauser made Luger dated between 1935 and 1939. You get the idea! Post some photos and perhaps we can identify some of the other parts.
