Well, many military contracts wanted to have magazines which were matched and individually hand fitted to that particular pistol. While all are technically interchangeable, some work better than others in certain types of Lugers. Commercial Lugers tended to have unmarked magazines with them. Military guns had magazines matched to them. The original one was numbered with the gun and the spare was numbered with a plus sign underneath. Sometimes magazines which were not originally matched but after the war were tested and matched the Luger to satisfactory standards were then re-numbered or “force-matched” to their new gun. This is common with Weimar/Nazi police Lugers as well as Volkpolizei and other GDR Lugers. Hope this helped and wish you best of luck with your new meds, pray for all those who suffer infirmaments every day!
