The answers to this question are both long and deep.

There are good reasons for every design variation in the Luger pistol. Some were based in preferences, some in necessity, and some in optional choices for Luger customers.

The Borchardt and Luger Automatic Pistols (the Gortz andf Sturgess masterwork) explains many of them.

While it's a great reference, many of the background discussions make great reading.
