Military are available in brown and black plastic. I have two pair of Argentine M1927 grips in black Bakelite. I just like the way the plastic/Bakelite grips feel while shooting. Especially if they're a bit worn (no sharp points on checkering). Your hand just naturally slides into the best grip, not like the new checkered wood grips that don't slide at all.

And it doesn't matter if you get them greasy/oily. And even if it does matter, it doesn't matter if it matters.
