I have seen ATF rulings saying that it's ok to remove these markings. I think the reasoning was a bit weird, something like "the law says to put the markings on, but it doesn't explicitly say that they can't be removed". However, BATF's rulings aren't even worth the paper they're written on, so I would tread carefully.
