I seem to remember that **Boric Acid** will remove Nickel Plate it may also work on the Phosphate Finish.
** Boric Acid** รข?? A mild naturally occurring Powered Acid, Often used for soaking wounds as a therapeutic treatment
If I remember correctly:
You use an oven glass pot and heat 2 cups of Distilled Water until nearly boiling in a microwave oven.
Remove from the oven and slowly add the Powdered Boric Acid while stirring rapidly.
Keep adding Acid until no more dissolves and there remain a few crystals in the bottom of the pot.
You can now add about two cups of distilled water to produce a 50% solution.
This was represented to slowly remove the Nickel Plate with minimal reduction of the steel.
This can be done on a stainless steel wire strainer suspended in the solution.
This was reputed to work at room temperature or heating the solution to speed up the action.
(I would suggest that you not boil the Acid solution as severe foaming may result
They claimed that a soft Grey finish resulted.
I've had no experience with this process and only report what I remember!
I would suggest that you try this on several small pieces of steel with various degrees of polish, and an old and a new nickel coins.
This may give you a handle on how it works and whether it will attack the polished steel and the nickel coins.
Both Boric Acid and Distilled Water should be available from your Grocery or Hardware store.
You can test the parts for complete removal of the Nickel by use of any cheap Instant Gun Blue.
Anywhere the blue will not take is still plated with Nickel. That simple!
Treat with the Boric Acid until the entire gun will blue and then the removal process is finished.
If you want to try the pistol with Instant Blue simply polish the weapon with 320, or 400 grit Emery Paper and follow the Bluing Instructions very Carefully and Closely.
I would recommend neutralizing the Acid in the Bluing process with a 15-Min soak in warm Baking Soda Solution About 1 heaping tablespoon of Soda to a pint of Distilled Water.
