Placing the mum above the chamber was a Japanese requirement
for military weapons. When the war ended the officials ordered
the mum removed due to the significance of the mum. Some were
removed some were not. I've seen rifles where it looked as if
someone tried to scratch it off, and some looked as if it was
filed away...
