Perhaps is not simply like that, let me explain.
I mean, are there snobs in the guns world? Totally, just like every other group of fans. Many people are fine with a $10 bottle of cheap wine, some prefer a $ 50 bottle, and a few are willing to get the $150 ultra select vintage. But that said, the nature of the 1911 design means that it needs an extra skilled attention during manufacturing, and for that reason that you do get what you pay for, up to a point. I really think that there's a possibility that the only reason that some (some, not all) people are content with bottom-tier 1911s is that they haven't learned enough yet about the design to notice the problems showing up.
With the many lessons that unfortunately I've learned myself and by observation, I have to say that decent 1911s seem to start around $ 800 or equivalent in Euro, with the Ruger 1911s, or with a COLT 1991, and start hitting the point of diminishing returns around $1900 with Dan Wesson's models beyond that you're into custom and specialized territory, which is a totally different story.
If you then compare any of my COLTs to my last WILSON you'll see the difference there too.
To me, owning an ED BROWN, WILSON COMBAT, L.BAER etc. is not different than owning an Omega or Rolex watch. Not to try to brag to others, just having the pride of owning something special and unique and well made.
Will any GLOCK or BERETTA (I love both of them) and a Casio cheap watch get the job done? Absolutely yes, and perhaps in many ways less problematic, reliable and cost a fraction less.
But in my opinion there is something nice about owning a fine 1911, a rare Swiss Luger, a fine Swiss watch, and a Montblanc pen. Do these items boost my self esteem? Surely no, I feel just thankful and blessed, and I like the hand made 1911 and the watch and some other high end items, as they give me some joy to own some very nice things. Do I drive a luxury car? Absolutely not nor I ive in a big villa, not at all.
I'm far from belonging to the rich's world, and I would add that hardly anyone sees my WILSON as I only use it at the range.
Sorry I didn't want to be boring.
