Unless there is a dimensional difference between the plastic followers and the metal ones, I can't wrap my head around why they would work any differently. It seems to me that brass on plastic would be even more slippery than brass on steel. What does the follower do, anyway, other than push up on the stack of rounds (pressure dictated by the spring) at the correct angle, and allow the last round to slide off smoothly? Has anyone swapped metal for plastic, or vice-versa?
