First of all welcome from the other side of the Atlantic, and I hope you'll enjoy being part of this Luger forum.

I assume by flat spring you mean perhaps the so called "Schliessfeder alter Art" the flat riband type mainspring that in the New Model 1900/06 was replaced by a coil spring, in which case I would agree that the former was surely more easy to breake, especially if not used for a while.
