Sellers charge whatever they think they might get, and buyers pay whatever the item is worth to them... Your assumption is correct, the process is entirely subjective. "Reasonableness" is entirely in the eye of the beholder(s).

You would be better off to ask for estimates of what a particular gun or part is currently costing in the market today... and once you have some educated, yet subjective answers, you will be better prepared to make your purchase based on your budget.
