I clean my mags very rarely, and only the ones I use at the range, in any case I rinse them with some sort of tetrachloroethylene which is a solvent used to take stains off clothes; but I would never use it on Luger mags with wooden bottoms.
When I've got to clean a very dirty gun I always start with a piece of rough cloth soacked with tetrachloroethylene.
