A lot of Sons of the Rising Sun got stranded on various Islands and othr plaqces and starved.
At Truk, all their stuff was on the bottom of the lagoon.
Other Iskands bypassed.
Cannibalism was not unknown. Even in Malaysia and Burma they got caught with no supply lines and local pickings were not that great. Some places they were hunted down and slaughtered.
There are a few dismal Japanese movies depicting the lives of some of their remaining troops in these areas. In those days, the average soldier was basically a barely literate peasant used to being told how to function on every level.
They did not fare well as that continued to break down.
