There should not be a lot of vertical play once the mag is inserted and "clicks" in. The mag catch may be worn, and 1/4" is totally unacceptable. It could also be the case that the aftermarkets are a crappy brand and their springs as well as that of the WWI mag are tired out. But I'd address the looseness of the mag first.
