I would have to agree with MarkC. The design of these is more closely appropriate to a silencer, not a .22 barrel adapter...
A .22 adapter would likely have threads on the barrel that when the nut is tightened on the outside of the barrel it would draw the barrel tightly into the chamber like the standard Erma conversion unit. This device attaches securely to the end of the barrel by securing itself to the front sight base. The end threads are external for attaching something to the end... hence, a silencer adapter.
The external threads also dramatically reduce the possibility that this device was a cleaning rod guide...
