To answer the question. I would have to say that lanyards came first. Men decided that they needed a way to secure their weapons/gear. They tied lengths of rope or strips of leather to them so they would not get lost. Someone said one day: "We need a specific attachment point for this securing rope or piece of leather, so it is not in the way of the working parts of my weapon or gear". Thus the lanyard loop or attachment point was born.
