I can't comment on how practical they were, but they were in common use by the Swiss on their Lugers. I guess it is a reflection of the care the Swiss exercised in the maintenance of their weapons. I am sure they never were left in place when the gun was carried in a holster as 1) it does not fit, particularly in the skinny Swiss holsters, and 2) I suspect the device was intended more for rack storage than carry. It is not so much for sight protection as it is to help maintain the bore cleanliness.
