Doug, Bill..I have seen quite a few of these as I work on Artillery rigs and have often wondered this myself. Usually when you take off the four screws and peel back the leather for the first time in many decades..likely since it was put on almost a hundred years ago..it looks totally unfinished. Kinda bare raw wood. Makes you wonder.
